60 years in the business world and an ambitious project by Renzo Piano realized with the Maltese Stone

The Maltese company Halmann Vella is famous all over the world for working with marble, granite and Maltese stone. Throughout the years there were numerous prestigious installations including overseas projects such as the London Underground and City Hall. 

This company is the leader in the stone industry in Malta and is currently focusing on the finishing touches to a project in which "archistar" Renzo Piano has been given the responsibility to re-establish the urban planning and architectural layout of the Valletta City Gate providing a deserved entrance to the city, a Unesco heritage site.

The project includes the new parliament building, restoration of the adjacent Opera House, and a new city gate.  Local hardstone has been used so the new City Gate blends in the bastion walls and the surroundings. 

The stone provided by Halmann Vella for the parliament facade is being used in an innovative way providing energy-saving technologies using brise-soleil elements set at an angle to intercept the sun’s rays.

Halmann Vella was able to do it by modernizing its workshops installing some of the latest automatic stoneworking machines supplied by Breton. 

These include: a Levibreton KFT 3600 marble slab polishing line, a Smartcut 550 Optima automatic cutting machine, Combicut DJ/NC waterjet/diamond disc combined cutting machine and a NC Quartz contour-shaping machine.

today, I’ll keep talking about my favorite subject, I want to talk about the Glorious President Abraham Lincoln’s head  in the White House Oval Office in Washington.

The 5-axis machining center Breton ContourFive NC 700 recently installed for our Customer Marble Fox - 1315 Armstrong Ave, San Francisco, CA 94124 – made the President Lincoln’s head in Limestone.

What can I say?
The 5-axis machining center Contourfive NC 700 for marble, granite, natural and composite stone  thanks to its vertical travel of 700mm, it is the ideal machine for architectural and funerary art as well as for those processing which require a deep dishing out; it therefore offers the users the possibility of performing different and complex machining operations which would otherwise require several machines:
- shaping utilising the disc to get large and medium pieces with complex shape.
- shaping and dishing out utilising millers.
- contouring utilising shaping tools.
- sawing utilising the disc in general
- turning of columns with shaped profiles or machining of columns to create a twisted effect all along the surface.
Please keep in mind that in addition to ContourFive NC 700, Breton provides the following machining centers:
- ContourFive NC700 HD with disc with diameter up to 800mm,

Hello everybody,
Did you visit Breton stand at MARMOMACC in Verona?
If so, you have certainly seen the reception desktop made of charcoal black Bretonstone with a bush-hammered surface in the middle of our stand: really amazing!

Here under you can see the different processing phases performed by a Breton 5-axes CNC machining centre Contourfive NC 700.

It is a C-shaped continuous top measuring 3.600x2.080mm and 20mm thick … and here it is at “Marmomacc 2013” in all its splendour.

ContourFive NC700 with a small column

Good morning,
Today I’d like to show you something new about Breton ContourFive NC 700 for marble and granite, a machining centre with five interpolated axes (six axes if the machine is equipped with a lathe).
Here you can see the machining of a peculiar piece, a small column whose surface is machined in two different ways:

 half column shows a bas-relief performed with a drill 

while the other half column is twisted making use of the disk.

This type of machining proves the great flexibility of ContourFive NC 700 equipped with a lathe.
Please consider that you can also produce:
- statues and busts
- wash-basins
- architectural components
- tombstones (funerary art)
- engraving
- large sized columns.The bench of ContourFive NC 700 measures 3.500x1.970mm, while the lathe can turn pieces with max. diameter 960mm and max. length 3.200mm, therefore this machine is ideal for processing also large pieces.
